5 Areas in Indonesia that are Safe from Earthquakes and Tsunamis

Being in the ring of fire and the many fault lines of the earth’s plates, makes Indonesia geographically a country prone to earthquakes and tsunamis. However, it turns out that there are still a number of areas in Indonesia that are safe from the threat of these two disasters.

According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) website, Indonesia is located on three tectonic plates. Among them are the Indo-Australian plate, the Eurasian plate, and the Pacific plate.

Reporting from the Kelaspintar.id page, these plates are the cause of frequent earthquakes in most parts of Indonesia. The extent of Indonesia’s coastline, makes many areas included in the ring of firebecome one of the tsunami alert.

Even so, it turns out that not all regions in Indonesia are disaster-prone or it can be said that there are urban areas in Indonesia that are safe from earthquakes and tsunamis.

The following are 5 areas in Indonesia that are safe from earthquakes and tsunamis :

1. Pontianak, West Kalimantan

It is known, Kalimantan is an island in Indonesia that tends to be safe from earthquakes. One of them is the Pontianak area which is far from the confluence of the Eurasian and Indoo-Australian plates.

This is what makes the Pontianak area safe from earthquakes. Even so, the Kalimantan region often experiences other disasters such as floods and landslides.

2. Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan

Even though it has been hit by small earthquakes several times, this city is still relatively safe from the threat of an earthquake. This is because earthquakes rarely occur there. But interestingly, the city is more often affected by flooding.

3. Palangkaraya, Central Kalimantan

The city which has been officially designated as the new capital city of Indonesia is strategically located because it is located in the heart of Borneo which is the center point of Indonesia. This location makes Palangkaraya free from the threat of earthquakes because there are no volcanoes there.

4. Batam

The island, which is located in the Riau Archipelago, is safe from earthquake shocks. Batam can be said to be relatively safe from earthquakes. Because in this city there is no meeting of the earth’s plates in the area there. In addition, the possibility of this city being hit by a tsunami is quite small.

5. Tanjung Pandan, Bangka Belitung

Tanjung Pandang is the main city located on Belitung Island. Belitung itself is an area that is known to be very safe from earthquake attacks when compared to other areas around it.

This turned out to be due to the location of Belitung which is not above the ring of fire. Even though it is safe from earthquakes, this city has another threat, namely flooding.
