Okinawa US military base falls toxic stockpile

OKINAWA: The United States (US) military base will demolish its six oil storage warehouses containing toxic substances in Okinawa by 2026.

The Okinawa Times reported that the materials contained in the facility included fire extinguishers containing organic fluorine compounds, which are dangerous to humans.

According to the US Department of Defense, the facility is no longer in use and is already rusting.

In January 2016, the Okinawa prefectural government detected high concentrations of organic fluoride in water sources near the US military base Kadena.

However, the Japanese side does not have the right to enter the base to conduct an investigation while the US side openly does not want to be responsible and refuses to allow the investigation to be conducted at the facility.

According to the Okinawa Times, based on internal emails, the US military believes that the base may have caused contamination. – AGENCIES
