Chinese Shuttlers Secure Quarterfinal Berths in All Categories at Indonesia Open

Chinese shuttlers have advanced into the quarterfinals in all categories at the 2023 Indonesia Open in Indonesia’s landmark badminton arena known as Istora Senayan on Thursday.

No. 1 mixed doubles players Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong initiated China’s success to secure a quarterfinal round berth earlier in the day against Japanese Hiroki Midorikawa and Natsu Saito with scores of 21-14, 21-17 within 32 minutes. The duo will vie against Danish duo Mathias Thyrri and Amalie Magelund in the quarterfinals.

Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping also managed to enter the mixed doubles quarterfinals after overcoming Denmark’s Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra Boje 21-9, 21-19 within 42 minutes. Thai duo Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai will be their opponents at the quarter stage.

In the men’s doubles, Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang progressed later as they easily defeated the Japanese duo Keiichiro Matsui and Yoshinori Takeuchi 21-9, 21-16.

In the women’s doubles, Olympic silver medalists Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan knocked out Indonesian pair Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma and Amallia Cahaya Pratiwi in straight sets. Meanwhile, Zhang Shuxian and Zheng Yu outclassed Indonesian duo Meilysa Trias Puspitasari and Rachel Allessya Rose 21-18, 21-8.

In the men’s singles, Li Shifeng took an easy 21-19, 21-14 win against Loh Kean Yew of Singapore within 44 minutes. He will face India’s Kidambi Srikanth in the next round.

In the women’s singles, He Bingjiao beat Yvonne Li from Germany in two sets and will vie against An Se Young of South Korea to enter the semifinal.

Meanwhile, Chen Yufei defeated Saena Kawakami from Japan 21-13, 21-19 and will face South Korea’s Kim Ga Eun.

The Indonesia Open, which has joined the BWF World Tour Super 1000 along with China Open and All England Open, offers the largest prize in all BWF events at an amount of 1.25 million U.S. dollars. ■
