Speed Boat With 7 on Board Goes Missing in Western Indonesia

Rescue teams are still searching for a speedboat with seven people on board which has been missing in Indonesia’s western coastline since Sunday evening, a local official said on Monday.

“Seven people were reported missing, consisting of four Australian citizens and three Indonesian citizens,” said Octavianto, chief of the search and agency (SAR) agency in Nias Island, North Sumatra province.

Octavianto said that SAR agencies in nearby regions have deployed personnel to search for the missing speedboat and victims amid severe weather.

Maritime accidents are common in Indonesia, a Southeast Asian archipelago of around 17,000 islands, due to lax safety standards and unexpected weather conditions.
