Jakarta Police Arrest Human Traffickers

The South Jakarta Metro Police have arrested three men suspected of human trafficking. They allegedly run a business of sending Indonesian migrant workers abroad using inappropriate and lawful procedures.

South Jakarta Police Chief Sr. Comr. Ade Ary said that officers cooperated with the Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Agency (BP2MI) to arrest the suspect. The two agencies also succeeded in preventing nine people from being trafficked as, planned to send abroad as prospective immigrant workers “in a way that was not in accordance with the procedures in force,” said Ade at the South Jakarta Metro Police, Friday, August 25, 2023.

Two suspects, MR (30) and AKR (29), were arrested on Tuesday, August 13 at the Kalibata City Apartment, South Jakarta, in which several units have been used to accommodate the trafficked victims. In the apartment units, police found and confiscated as evidence several passports and airline tickets to Japan, visas, and mobile gadgets.

The third suspect, A (38), was arrested in Condong Catur, Depok Sleman, Special Region of Yogyakarta. The police confiscated 17 passports as well as a number of paper works and documents.

The suspects are charged with violating Law No.18/2017 on the protection of migrant workers. They are facing up to 10 years in prison and a fine of Rp5 billion. The suspects are also charged with violating Law no.21/2007 on the eradication of human trafficking, the minimum punishment is 3 years in prison.
