Three Years of Opening Social Rehabilitation Program, Prison I Surabaya Releases 620 Inmates Who Are Drug Addicts

The Regional Office of the East Java Ministry of Law and Human Rights plays an active role in improving the quality of life of inmates involved in drug abuse cases. One of them is the social rehabilitation program at Prison I Surabaya.

“Over the last three years, a total of 620 inmates in Surabaya Prison have participated in the social rehabilitation program,” said Head of Regional Office of the East Java Ministry of Law and Human Rights Heni Yuwono when closing the 2023 Social Rehabilitation Program for Prisoners in Prison I Surabaya.

Heni also noted that as many as 60 percent of prison and detention center residents were narcotics cases. With most of them being users, not dealers.

“So this rehabilitation program is an important step in efforts to reduce the number of drug addictions,” explained Heni, who was accompanied by the Head of Corrections Division, Asep Sutandar.

Furthermore, Heni emphasized the importance of cooperation between agencies to make this rehabilitation program a success. He realized that the Inmates were not bad people, but those who had lost their way.

“So it is a shared responsibility to guide them back to the right path,” concluded Heni.

Meanwhile, Surabaya Prison Head Jayanta said that since opening the Social Rehabilitation Program in 2021, Surabaya Prison I has collaborated with three rehabilitation foundations. The goal is that the rehabilitation program can comply with specified standards.

“We want this program to really produce behavioral changes and improve the quality of life of the inmates so that they can truly be free from the bad influence of drugs,” explained Jayanta.

Of the participants who took part, all participants from start to finish completed the rehabilitation program well. Each program is carried out for six months.

“Indicators of success lie in the results of the assessments carried out, namely the initial assessment, when the program was first run, the follow-up assessment (third month) and the final assessment (sixth month),” explained Jayanta.
