Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Army, General Agus Subiyanto, as a candidate for the Indonesian Defense Forces (TNI) commander, highlighted his vision of professional, responsive, integrative, modern, and adaptive (PRIMA) .
Subiyanto remarked that the Indonesian Army also follows a similar vision.
“The PRIMA vision aims to build TNI as an institution with resilience and fighting power to face and overcome all forms of threats, disturbances, obstacles, and challenges that will arise,” he told Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) in Jakarta, Monday.
According to the general, TNI’s professionalism can be realized by ensuring well-trained soldiers that are ably equipped to apply modern weapons systems.
“The provision of modern defense and warfare equipment must consider the type of the assignment. That is the focus of our development in professionalism,” he affirmed.
Subiyanto then drew attention to other aspects to increase TNI’s professionalism and related to sound organizational governance and boosting soldiers’ welfare through a decent pay structure.
“We still need to consider various allowances for our soldiers in some areas, including adequate housing, education, and health facilities, which are also needed for soldiers and their families. (It is) because this greatly influences the morale and spirit of soldiers when carrying out their duties,” the general emphasized.
Regarding TNI’s vision of being responsive, Subiyanto pointed out several issues, such as potential conflicts in the South China Sea, Papua, the 2024 elections, and natural disasters.
Regarding Papua, Subiyanto has planned to launch a smart power approach involving the use of a blend of hard power, soft power, and diplomacy.
“Hard power through combat readiness to face combatants. Soft power by supporting the implementation of accelerated welfare development in Papua. This soft power approach should be carried out jointly, in synergy between the TNI and all relevant ministries, institutions, and stakeholders,” he stated.
Subiyanto’s presentation of vision and mission as candidate for the TNI commander’s post is a series of fit and proper tests at Commission I of the DPR RI. After the fit and proper test, Commission I studied the vision and mission conveyed by Subiyanto.
Subiyanto is the sole candidate for TNI commander proposed by President Joko Widodo to the DPR RI to replace Admiral Yudo Margono who retires on November 26, 2023.
In the fit and proper test, Commission I of the DPR RI studied the vision and mission of the TNI commander candidate and raised questions on several issues, including those related to securing the 2024 elections, the TNI’s neutrality, and issues related to Papua.
Earlier, Subiyanto was inaugurated as new army chief of staff on October 25, 2023, to replace General Dudung Abdurachman who retired on November 19, 2023.
