Jakarta forms team to crack down on illegal parking

The Jakarta provincial government has established a joint team called Lintas Jaya, involving the Indonesian Military (TNI), the National Police (Polri), and the Attorney General’s Office, to check illegal parking in the city.

“The Lintas Jaya team consists of elements from the Transportation Office, the police, and the military, as well as from the Public Security and Order Agency (Satpol PP), the district court, and the prosecutors’ office,” head of the Jakarta Transportation Office, Syafrin Liputo, said here on Monday.

The joint team is expected to have a deterrent effect against illegal parking. Violators will also face light criminal sanctions, following continuous persuasive efforts.

“This week, we will conduct a meeting, as this involves all agencies; after that, we will convey about the implementation,” he said.

He added that his side is also regularly regulating illegal parking on the streets of Jakarta, and vehicles that park illegally will be towed for further processing.

“We act on vehicles that are being parked illegally. Either receiving information from the public, or during patrol, the Lintas Jaya team will regulate this by towing them,” he informed.

Earlier, the Greater Jakarta Police’s traffic director, Senior Commissioner Latif Usman, said that it is not difficult to eradicate illegal parking, which disturbs the community and often causes congestion.

“It is actually not difficult and is our responsibility to do that. Anyone, including the public, can supervise, if they feel disturbed (by illegal parking), report it to the police,” he said on Wednesday (May 9, 2024).

Usman said that his side is ready to assist in curbing the illegal parking problem.
“We will definitely help. This problem of illegal parking is related to public order, so it is our common duty and responsibility,” he added.
