JAKARTA – aespa, a girl group made by SM Entertainment, has recently become a hot topic of conversation among K-pop fans in Indonesia. The reason is the presentation of the latest episode of the SM Culture Universe (SMCU) series project, which was just released on the aespa YouTube channel.
The latest release, “ep.3 Girls (Don’t you know I’m a Savage?)” presents the latest adventures of the aespa members along with their respective avatars exploring the virtual world, and facing their strongest enemy Black Mamba.
Well, in one of the scenes, one of the aespa members, Giselle, is shown exploring various virtual data to attack the Black Mamba avatar. At that time, Giselle appeared on the screen opening a map of cities in the world. Among the maps, tucked the names of three cities from Indonesia, namely Bekasi, Karawang and Bogor.
Suddenly the video release was flooded with comments from netizens in Indonesia, aespa fans or the K-pop world in general. The presence of the identity of Indonesian cities other than Jakarta in the works of K-pop idols is something that is rare.
From there, netizens also commented that the emergence of the city name from Indonesia was part of Aespa’s future world tour plans.
Episode 3 of the SMCU series has also become a trend in various media. One of them is on YouTube, where as of today the video is Trending # 5 in Indonesia.
For those who don’t know, SMCU is the latest project from SM Entertainment that tries to explore the boundaries of imagination regarding entertainment content or the world of music. This series project has been introduced since early 2021 with the first episode titled “Black Mamba”, like the title of aespa’s debut song which became one of the most successful releases in 2020.
Talking about SMCU, of course, cannot be separated from the identity of aespa as a girl group unit under the auspices of SM Entertainment. From the beginning, this group was projected as the most imaginative project from SM Entertainment, which combines real artists and virtual artists.
Each member, namely Giselle, Ningning, Winter and Karina, each has their avatar partner in another dimension. The avatars were developed using AI technology, and were developed by referring to the characters and the real life of aespa personnel.
That’s how the concept of aespa was introduced to K-pop fans around the world. aespa seems to have a slightly different mission from other units made by SM Entertainment, namely carrying out the metaverse concept , which separates the image of real artists with virtual artists, the real world with the virtual one.
Through the three-episode SMCU serial project that has been released so far, it can be seen how the concepts of music and story are trying to be combined. So it’s not just music, aespa becomes a story world with a complicated universe. The world is visualized by combining cartoon, animation, webtoon, motion graphics, avatar and story elements.
aespa itself as a unit, always identifies their identity with the concept of metaverse . Including when they were entrusted with attending the United Nations meeting in New York in July last year, where Aespa personnel explained the group’s creative orientation.
So, apart from the virtual adventure, aespa itself has announced their first solo concert in Korea titled “2023 Aespa 1st Concert ‘SYNK: HYPER LINE”. The concert will take place on February 25 and 26, 2023 at the Jamsil Arena in Seoul, as reported by Soompi.
“SYNK : HYPER LINE” will be aespa’s first solo concert since debuting in November 2020 with “Black Mamba”.
