Supreme Court Revises Death Sentence to Life Imprisonment for Ferdy Sambo in Premeditated Murder Case

The Supreme Court (MA) has accepted the cassation request of Ferdy Sambo, who was initially sentenced to death for the planned murder case of Brigadier Nofriansyah Yosua Hutabarat or Brigadier J.

In its ruling, the MA has overturned Ferdy Sambo‘s death penaltyand instead sentenced the former Head of the Indonesian National Police’s Professionalism and Security Affairs Division (Kadiv Propam Polri) to life imprisonment.

“The sentence is life imprisonment,” reads a statement on the MA’s website regarding Ferdy Sambo‘s punishment, as quoted on Tuesday, August 8, 2023.

Previously, the Panel of Judges at the South Jakarta District Courthad pronounced the verdict on the defendants in the Brigadier J case. It was revealed that Ferdy Sambo was initially sentenced to death.

The death penalty verdict for Ferdy Sambo remained unchanged even after the Panel of Judges at the Jakarta High Court (PT DKI) issued a death penalty verdict following an appeal from Ferdy Sambo‘s defense.

The PT DKI’s decision upheld the previous verdict from the South Jakarta District Court that sentenced Ferdy Sambo to death.

In the same case, Putri Candrawathi, the wife of Ferdy Sambo, was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Meanwhile, the other three defendants, Kuat Ma’ruf, Ricky Rizal, and Bharada Richard Eliezer or Bharada E, received sentences of 15 years, 13 years, and 1.5 years in prison, respectively.
