MK Officially Rejects Age Limit Lawsuit of Indonesia President and Vice President Candidates

The Indonesian Constitutional Court (MK) officially rejected the lawsuit of the minimum age of presidential and vice-presidential candidates filed by the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI).

The judicial review session of Law Number 7 of 2017 concerning General Elections related to the age limit of the vice presidential candidate was held in Jakarta, on Monday, October 16, 2023.

The session was chaired by Constitutional Court Chairman Anwar Usman and attended by nine constitutional judges.

“Rejecting the petition of the petitioners in its entirety,” said Constitutional Court Chairman Anwar Usman when reading out the decision.

The decision was made for lawsuit number 29/PUU-XXI/2023. According to the Constitutional Court, determining the minimum age of the president and vice president is the domain of the legislators.

Previously, a lawsuit was filed by the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI) with lawsuit number 29/PUU-XXI/2023 with the applicants Anthony Winza Prabowo, Danik Eka Rahmaningtyas, Dedek Prayudi, and Mikhael Gorbachev Dom. In their demands, they asked for the minimum age of presidential and vice presidential candidates to be 35 years old.

Previously, Head of Legal Administration and Registrar of the Constitutional Court Fajar Laksono said the hearing would start at 10:00 a.m. and be held open to the public at the Constitutional CourtBuilding, 2nd floor, Jakarta.  Fajar added that regarding security, the Constitutional Court has coordinated with the National Police.
