Jakarta Needs to Bolster Industrial Sector to Be Global City: Official

Jakarta’s industrial sector needs to be prepared and strengthened so that it can become a global city after losing its national capital status next year, an official said.

“The (industrial) sector can help realize the goal of (Jakarta) being a global city because it is one of the important contributors to the economy, both on a regional and national scale,” head of the Jakarta Industry, Trade, Co-operatives, Small, and Medium Enterprises Office, Elisabeth Ratu Rante Allo, said here on Monday.

At a business matching event, she pointed out that Jakarta is intensively carrying out industrial empowerment through the intensification of domestic product utilization (P3DN) and holding business matching regularly.

“Why should you be proud of (products) made in Indonesia? Because with the love, all these products will be crafted by Indonesian people, our assisted micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and industries in Indonesia,” she said.

If the products are made by other countries and then imported into Indonesia, then those countries will reap greater benefits, she added.

Allo said that business matching events can serve as a platform to introduce Indonesian-made products to a wider audience because promotion alone is not enough.

Indonesia has urged the public to jointly mobilize and invoke the spirit of love for the homeland through the Proud of Indonesian Products and Proud of Travel in Indonesia programs.

Jakarta is ranked 74th out of 156 cities worldwide in the 2023 Global City Index (GCI).

“It is still a long way off and a challenge on how the stakeholders can raise that ranking,” she said.

Jakarta’s industrial sector needs to be prepared so it can become an international standard city to attract investment and support economic growth, she added.
